Description

Create a first quadrant model of the Unit Circle. Make learning and memorizing the Unit Circle fun and engaging! Trace the template onto a clear Shrinky Dink sheet, then bake to shrink down to a hard, scaled quarter unit circle. High School students may shrink on their own at home or you can shrink!

There are three pieces:

  1. The Quadrant One piece marked with the first quadrant and angles in degrees and radians, in addition to the cosine measurements from 0 to 1.
  2. The Radius piece, marked with the one unit and long enough to meet the tangent measurements
  3. The Sine piece, marked from 0 to 1 for the vertical measurements of sine.

Trace each piece, punch a hole in each at the designated spot, then cut with rounded edges. Make sure the punch the holes before baking.

To bake, get a cookie sheet and a brown paper grocery bag. Preheat the oven to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Put the cutouts on the papered cookie sheet and cover with another brown paper piece. The second paper will help the shrinky dink shrink without curling up into a ball. In one to two minutes peek at the square to observe the shrinking process. After two minutes you may remove the top paper and watch the shrinking to final size and it will flatten out in the final process. Remove and place between two books to keep it very flat. It will be hot so remove carefully.

Sew up the holes as pictured and you have a working model of the triangles within the unit circle to measure out sine, cosine, and tangent!
