Unit 3 - Self Management (from the Kindness Classroom: A Social Emotional Yearlong Curriculum)
This SEL curriculum program focuses on self management, self-control, impulse control, anger management, anxiety and worry, as well as mindfulness and calm down strategies in the primary grades.
The goal is to provide easy-to-use lessons and resources to help teachers introduce children to the parts of their brain and how emotions affect their choices. With this self-understanding, children can understand the actions of others, and choose the most appropriate actions for themselves.
These engaging, community-building activities give students the exposure and practice ESSENTIAL social skills needed to create a successful classroom environment.
♦ Please note: This is unit 3 of the full year SEL Kindness Classroom unit, which is a comprehensive Social/Emotional Learning curriculum for the ENTIRE YEAR (40 lessons - 200+ activities). Click HERE to take a quick look at the full year curriculum, and to read more FAQs about the program.

Why Teach Self-Management?
Self regulations, or self management, is an important topic in today’s classroom. Over the last 20+ years of teaching, I’ve dedicated an increasing amount of time to teaching these skills to help students who:
-have meltdowns or temper tantrums
-have difficulty taking turns
-demonstrate social interaction problems
-lack self-control or appropriate reactions often
-make other students uncomfortable because of sudden outbursts
-move quickly with no regard for others or their belongings
-grab or touch impulsively or inappropriately
The more skilled students are at managing themselves, the more smoothly the classroom runs. The atmosphere is calm and happy, we move quickly through curricular topics without as much disruption. Students are ready to learn.
In this unit, we explore how to ensure that students are ready to learn by helping them understand what is happening when they have big emotions, and why emotions can cause poor choices.
We explore relevant parts of the brain in easy to understand child versions:
*We all have a GUARD DOG part of our brain (Amygdala) that decides if new information is good or bad. If it’s good, it passes the information to the other parts of the brain. If it’s bad, emotion takes over and logical thinking is hampered. This is when we make poor choices!
*We all have a WISE OWL part of our brain (prefrontal cortex) that makes logical decisions. It is blocked from doing so when the guard dog takes over!
*We can learn self-calming techniques to tame our guard dog, calm down, and let our wise owl be in charge of choices!
