Wonderful activity. Students could clearly understand by the end how so many end up in poverty. The tax piece is a bit out of date, so I found a tax calculator for our state that we used instead.

Poverty In America
Life After High School
This activity can help students to better understand what adulthood looks like based on career and education choices and how sometimes people can live in poverty even while being employed full time.
The basic assumption of the activity is that the students have graduated from high school but have not chosen to attend college; instead they have entered the workforce. The activity will help the students think about how they would manage and budget their lives if they were faced with a potential life of poverty even if they were working 40 hours a week.
This activity can be used in economics when discussing pay differences based on education level or welfare policy. It can also be used in a US History class during a unit on the 1950s where they are discussing the disparity between the wealthy and the rest of America in post-WWII society or during a unit on Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. It can also be used at the end of the school year as a modern issue activity.
