Understanding Identity: LOTS of activities from K-Grade 12!

Help your students to build self-esteem, empathy, self-awareness, and compassion by studying the CONCEPT of identity and then digging deeper into their own identities! Included are inquiry-based activities, activities that prompt/further discussion and understanding, and ideas to extend learning. It includes lessons and activities across elementary, middle, and high school. The activities are suitable for IB PYP, MYP and DP in addition to national curriculum.

Students learn best when they feel safe and understood. Help them to consider how others can see them on the outside, but then dig deeper to see who they are on the inside and what makes them that way. There are several activities included in this pack, so you can pick and choose what will benefit your students most.

You could use these at the start of the year, OR any time you wish to explore identity with your students. It might be:

- Part of a unit of study (such as Who We Are or How We Express Ourselves)

- A response to SEL (social and emotional learning) needs. This could be any of a number of situations, including:

.........Students being bullied or bullying others

.........Students suffering from low self-esteem

.........Teasing among students

.........Discrimination or culturally insensitive language or play

.........Students confused about where or how they belong

.........A celebration of the diversity present in your classroom

.........A starting point for individual inquiries or passion projects

Most teachers do “get to know you” activities in the first couple weeks of the school year, but these activities should not be limited to this timeframe. First of all, genuinely getting to know people takes time. Second, people are always changing.

As students—and adults—go through their lives, they grow and change. These activities can even be repeated at the end of the year, allowing students to reflect on how they’ve grown and changed over time.

This pack includes a range of activities, including worksheets, templates, examples, and even book and song lists! Choose the activities that best suit your group of students, and use them all throughout the year.
