What educators are saying
Description
The contents of this bundle include:
1. Group Inquiry Project: This is an introduction to the novel. Students read the back of the book and research different words on the description. They then share their discoveries with the class in a creative presentation.
2. Reading Guide: Students can use this guide or the text analysis guide as they read through the book.
3. Text Analysis Guided Exploration: This activity can be used all throughout the reading of the novel. Students are given chunks of the text to summarize using Twitter and longer versions.
4. MEIN KAMPF: Excerpt from Hitler’s book with background information. Courtesy of https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/kampf.html
5. Reading Nonfiction handout: This handout utilizes social media, technology, and questioning as students work through nonfiction works like Mein Kampf.
6. Adrift at Sea handout: As students read the novel, they chronicle the imagery used as the characters are stuck in a life raft on the Pacific Ocean. After chronicling the evidence, they write their own first person paragraph from the experience of the life raft.
7. Personal Inquiry: The same idea as the group inquiry, but this time the students can take anything they are curious about from the novel and do research, writing a paragraph and citing their sources.
8. Hitler Day: In Stations, students will research different components of Hitler’s life. These stations will merely be places the students use laptops/computers to research that question. You can either assign students to stations, or require them to research a different question each day – it’s up to you how you apply this idea!
9. Character Analysis: Students analyze one character from the novel and write an analysis of that character. Granted, this is a nonfiction text, but students can still analyze the character using evidence from the text.
10. MLA Markup Activity: This is a great activity that helps students connect their works cited pages with their in-text citations. It is connected to the Personal Inquiry activity.
11. Character Analysis Writing Helps: A document that helps students write their character analysis paragraph.
12. Louis Zamperini Documentary: The Unbroken movie has special features including a documentary about Louis. This handout is for use with that documentary, but also could possibly be used with other YouTube clips, etc.
13. Socratic Seminar Questions: The rules and discussion questions for a final Socratic Seminar over the novel.
14. STEM Questions: These are STEMS for students to develop their OWN questions for the Socratic Seminar.
15. Socratic Seminar Rubric: Assessment rubric for the Socratic Seminar
16. Socratic Seminar Evaluation: A personal way for students to evaluate one another during the Socratic Seminar.
17. Human Rights PBL Museum Project & Rubric: A final project that has students research a modern day human rights violation and create a museum display using multimedia resources.
