What educators are saying

I used this with my 6th graders toward the end of the school year. They were super engaged and came to class ready to work on their structures. This was a great resource. Thanks!

Description

Ultraviolet Light Shelter Engineering Design Challenge: Updated with digital journals!

Students are on a mission to protect an astronaut from ultraviolet light over-exposure in this engaging STEM challenge. Using UV-sensitive beads, students explore how different materials absorb UV light and use the engineering design process to build a UV-safe shelter.

This design challenge allows students to work in teams, apply the engineering design process, and connect science topics to real-world applications. The teacher will provide the structure to the project, but students will take an active role in designing and building their own shelter.

This packet includes:

  • Detailed educator guide with links to resources
  • Photos of student project examples
  • Student handouts including an Ultraviolet Light information sheet
  • STEM Career Connection: Meteorologist
  • Student recording packet for each step of the Engineering Design Process
  • Editable pages in Google Slides with a digital and printed journal versions
  • Reflection questions
  • Math extension questions in imperial and metric units

Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas 𝘝 = 𝘭 𝘸 𝘩 and 𝘝 = 𝘣 𝘩 to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.
