What educators are saying

This has helped me ensure I have the resources necessary to welcome our incoming Ukrainian students. The translation of verbs and sentences helps me as I don't speak the language. Helps me connect to the kids.

    Description

By now you know the value of bilingual ESL newcomer activities and resources for ESL students. "Ukrainian to English: ESL Ukrainian / Ukraine Newcomer Activities" is what your Ukrainian Newcomers need to adjust quickly to life in your classroom. This mini-bundle includes:

First. “ESL Ukraine/ Ukrainian sentences: ESL Newcomers Activities - Rapid Speaking” this allows teachers and limited English speaking students to communicate immediately with little or no knowledge of each other's native language. Simply print copies for yourself and your ESL newcomers. Point to the translation of what you are saying on this practical bilingual resource (English to Ukrainian). ESL newcomers can also point to what they want to say in their language (Ukrainian to English) as you read the English translation next to the phrase to understand their message. Excellent for helping beginning ESL Ukraine/ Ukrainian speaking newcomers acclimate to your classroom prior to having a chance to develop basic English speaking skills.

Second. "ESL Ukrainian /Ukraine - ESL Newcomer Activities: Things-in-School Vocabulary" is designed for building student vocabulary to facilitate the development of English speaking and reading skills in Ukrainian/ Ukraine ESL newcomers. This ESL newcomers activities resource contains 40 of the most common school related vocabulary words - English to Ukrainian / Ukrainian to English.

    General uses include:

    • ESL Speaking practice activities -
    • Student reference binder supplement -
    • Reading & writing center activities -
    • ESL newcomers activities bulletin boards -

Specific activities for this ESL newcomers activities set include:

1.First, give each Ukrainian ESL newcomer a copy of the vocabulary lists. Then have each student identify vocabulary words they already know in English by highlighting or putting a checkmark next to those words. Find out how many of the words each student already knows in English. Do some students know all the words? Do some know only a few?

Now you can identify which students are absolute ESL beginners versus those who already have some knowledge of the English language. Plan your activities and small groups based on this knowledge.

2.Find the cognates. Read the English vocabulary word slowly. Have the student quietly repeat the English word. Then have the student silently read the word in Ukrainian. Ask the students which words on the English list sound similar to the word in Ukrainian. Verify all cognates on the vocabulary list. Focus on these first because they will be the easiest for students to learn.

3.Play a listening game. Give each student a copy of the vocabulary list. In random order, say an English word from the list. Students scan the list and circle the word.

4.Play a speaking game. Using a round robin method, have each student pick a vocabulary word from the list and verbally use it in a sentence to the best of their ability.

For example, a beginner might say, You the teacherwhereas an advanced student who selects the same word might say “You are the teacher.” Try not to focus on issues of non-standard speaking. In other words, don’t correct the beginner with “You are the teacher.” At this time it’s more important to get the students to “speak.” Correcting verbal errors too soon often causes students to stay in the silent period longer.

5.Use for spelling test. As the students learn the vocabulary words, they should also learn how to spell them. Keep the spelling tests short. Five words for beginners and no more than 10 words for intermediate/advanced.
