What educators are saying

This is wonderful to include with my lesson planning for my Master’s Degree and building my portfolio and creating artifacts.
I used this to make learning about triangles more hands on. It was engaging. My students and I had productive conversation about classifying each triangle.

Description

This purchase contains 16 printable cut-outs of triangles and three classifying charts for types of triangles.

HOW TO USE THIS PRODUCT

Organize your students in groups – I want to generate discussions and accountable talk amongst my students with this activity. Each group is given a set of triangles and asked to sort the triangles first by angles.

Have a chart ready to go – I put my chart on the active board. Once all groups are done sorting their triangles by sides or angles, I appoint some individuals to go up and fill in the letters representing triangles for each column of the chart. I will purposely select students/groups with incorrect answers to generate debates and discussions.

DEBATE TIME! – I then give my students a certain about of time to critique the filled out chart.

Friendly critiques – Finally, we analyze what is wrong with the chart and fix the misconceptions. All corrections are STUDENT LED.

These activities are meant to build conceptual understanding – Most often students are able to merely memorize the definitions of each triangle classification. Identifying triangles and creating “always, sometimes, and never” statements on triangles build conceptual understanding.

TAKE YOUR TIME! – These activities take us 3 days to complete. The last chart requires deep thinking and I never rush this process. 

Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
