Two-Step Word Problems (SPANISH)

This is a Smart Notebook file to teach solving two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction (up to 1,000). THE FILE IS IN SPANISH.

The first slide introduces a pattern (Example: Lucas and Andre want to raise $500 for their school. Lucas made $125, and Andre made $322. How much more do they need?) Then, the next four slides will have the same sentence frame, but with different numbers. Then, the next slide will have the sentence frame, but blanks, so that students can practice writing and trading and solving their own problems. There are seven total sentence frames throughout the presentation. Review slides are built in.

I teach in a bilingual school where my English-speaking students are learning Spanish. The repeating of the sentence frames allows students to build their language ability while practicing the math skills. Clip art scaffolds their vocabulary. I use the embedded readings strategy to repeat the simple frame several times before adding new elements in future review slides to scaffold language learning.

I print the slides as a handout or as thumbnails and give them to the students as a packet. Over several days or weeks, we work on a few problems per day. You could also use it as a game, or have students solve the problems on mini-whiteboards before holding up their answers. If you have students who can read Spanish independently, they could use the slides printed out as task cards in a math center. Advanced students can create their own series of questions and answers using the blank frames.

This presentation was designed for teachers who speak Spanish and teach math in Spanish, but an ESL teacher who has some Spanish background may find it helpful as well.

3.OA.8 - Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
