What educators are saying

Love the color coding on this and the different versions of the same problem. I use them as a whole class and have groups match themselves up with each other. Uses many different strategies for the same math problem.
This produce is AMAZING for students with disabilities, or students who need extra scaffolding to support this tricky skill. The visuals, step-by-step directions, etc really helped it click for my kiddos!

Description

Teaching students how to solve multi-step word problems can be a real challenge. These task cards provide a unique approach to solving two-step addition and subtraction problems. They help students visualize what is happening in each problem and then represent it with an equation.

There are 10 sets of cards. Each set includes:

  • Word problem card with one multi-step problem
  • Picture card that represents the problem with a visual model
  • Equation card that represents the problem mathematically
  • Answer card

✅ HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE

Math Center Activity

Students read each multi-step word problem and match it with the corresponding picture model, equation, and answer cards. Each card has a letter so that when answers are recorded correctly on the recording sheet, each set will spell out a different word.

Guided Math Activity

These cards work well as visual supports when teaching students how to solve two-step math problems. Color coded text helps students connect the words in the problem to each step in the model and equation.

Independent Practice or Assessment

Just the word problem cards can be used for independent practice or formative assessment purposes. Students can use the included worksheet to demonstrate how to solve the problem and explain their thinking.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
