Inference Activity:
Use this lifted copy of the text to challenge your students to think about the clues the author gives to explain where the ants are.
I use this with my students FIRST, before letting them see the real book with the pictures. This lesson is always an engaging one in my classroom. The students dig through the text for clues to help them figure out where the ants are. We discuss their ideas & decide if they are reasonable or not, based on the clues from the text. (Example: a lot of my students first think the sugar cubes are ice. We talk about how the author said the crystals are the most delicious food the queen has ever tasted.) Once the students figure out where the ants are, I show them the picture in the book.
Where are the ants? Projectable Cards
This PowerPoint contains cards that can be displayed via an ActivPanel, Board, or Projector. Students read each slide and determine where the ants are. These slides can be used as fluency exercises, or as a way to discuss the text as a whole group. The PowerPoint could also be printed onto cardstock and turned into task cards to highlight small sections of the text.
