What educators are saying

This resource was a big hit as a fun way to get 2nd grade emergent readers and ELLs engaged and having fun with reading and writing craftivities for Thanksgiving. We listened to the read aloud story on YouTube, then worked in table groups to complete the activities.
My students loved using this resource. They were engaged in the resource and had no trouble getting started. It didn't take much time to prepare the resource.

Description

This adorable turkey unit provides you with fun lessons, writing prompts, activities and crafts for the entire month of November! Turkey is in trouble... he doesn't want to get eaten this Thanksgiving! Students love to write about their opinion, help turkey hide in a disguise, make adorable turkey crafts and wanted posters, play turkey math games, write the room and so much more! Teachers love that students are engaged while learning the standards, and that these activities require very little or no prep at all!

The activities included in this unit are perfect for:

  • Preschool
  • Kindergarten
  • Pre-k
  • 1st grade
  • 2nd grade

The crafts and posters could also be used for older grades 3-5 as well.

--- WHAT IS INCLUDED? ---

Turkey in Disguise Pocket Chart Game

Students match a turkey in a disguise to a hiding place (example: the turkey dressed up as a doctor would hide in the hospital).

Match the Disguise to the Correct Hiding Place

Check for understanding with a cut + paste activity and/or have students make their own flip chart.

Opinion Writing

Multiple writing papers and options are included.

  • Picture word banks to help students generate ideas and assist with spelling.
  • Graphic organizers help children plan and organize what they want to write about.
  • Sentence starters and frames help children get their words down on paper without feeling overwhelmed.

An adorable turkey topper is included so you can choose which activity to display on a bulletin board or in the hallway. People love to stop and read these adorable writing crafts!

Built in scaffolding and support ensure that all students can successfully complete this activity and project.

Sequencing

Picture vocabulary cards help students put events in order: first, next, last.
First, how will they disguise the turkey? Next, where should turkey hide? Last, what will they make for dinner instead of turkey?

This writing activity can also be made into a craft to display if you choose.

Class Book

This project is no prep for you!

Two options are included:

  1. Write turkey's disguise on the line provided
  2. Color in the bubble letters

Students can choose a turkey already in a disguise, or they can draw an color their own. A front cover is included so you can easily assemble an adorable class book!

Wanted Poster

Students and families absolutely love this project! A parent letter is included if you choose to send this project home to be completed.

Students choose a disguise for turkey such as a gum ball machine, popcorn, a sheep, a duck, etc. Use craft supplies such as felt, yarn, feathers, cotton balls, etc. to create an adorable turkey in disguise.

I've also included a very quick and easy version if you don't wish to do a full craft project. This version you can simply have students color or paint.

After disguising their turkey, students fill out the wanted poster. For younger children, you can ask them what they would like their poster to say and you can scribe for them or write in highlighter for them to trace.

It is so fun seeing what students come up with! See photos and the preview for ideas.

Mini Books

Three turkey mini books are included:

  1. Turkey Hide and Seek
  2. Counting Feathers
  3. Don't Eat Me!

Low Prep Activities + Worksheets

  • Students love to play write the room with the turkeys in disguise.
  • Practice putting numbers 1-20 in order with cut-apart puzzles.
  • Practice labeling with differentiated activities to label turkeys in disguise.

Plus, 10 additional no-prep, standards-based worksheets are included that work well for fast finishers, time fillers, centers, and whole group class activities.

Skills include addition, teen numbers, sight words, telling time, counting by 5s, alphabetical order and more!

Read Aloud Activities

I use these activities after reading one of our favorite turkey books.

We cut out the characters and put them on spatulas or popsicle sticks and have so much fun retelling the story as characters. Sequencing pocket chart cards help us put the events from the story in order, and finally there is a cut + paste activity for students to complete on their own.
