How to use this True Crime Nonfiction Article:

Explore the lives of Marty Markowitz and Dr. Herschkopf using this reading comprehension passage! Students will read about Dr. Herschkopf’s manipulation of Marty and his wealth during their patient-doctor relationship. Students will practice close reading by answering the comprehension questions provided.

You can begin this activity by reading through the nonfiction article, “Marty and the Shrink” This informational article is suitable for grades 6-12 with a Lexile score of 1180; this means it is a rigorous text for grades 7 and 8, and an appropriate text for grades 9 and 10.  Students in higher grade levels can benefit from this article by practicing the close reading skills assessed with this resource.

After reading the nonfiction article, students will then complete the close reading activities using the comprehension and discussion questions provided. Students are prompted to summarize the main ideas from the text, make inferences, and apply the information to their own lives.

To consolidate this activity, a detailed answer key has also been provided.
