What educators are saying

I used this as an assignment for the trigonometry unit and it was super fun for the students to apply their understanding in a fun way.
My students enjoyed this worksheet over the traditional practice we do. I liked how they were challenged to pick their own path to the treasure.

Description

Calling all π-rates of the Caribbean!

To reach the buried treasure, students must apply the sine, cosine, or tangent ratios, and the Pythagorean Theorem, to calculate all unknown lengths along their path. Right triangle trigonometry just hit the high seas.

INCLUDED:

  • Word (.doc) and PDF (.pdf)
  • Kilometres version and Miles version
  • Colourful handout with instructions
  • Answer key & rubric suggestions

This activity is perfect for Grade 10 Academic or Applied students (Ontario curriculum: MPM2D, MFM2P), as it builds the core skill of selecting and using the appropriate trig ratio to determine a missing side length. This prepares students for the next step of applying this knowledge to real life applications.

This is more fun than a straight boring quiz.

There are multiple paths that could be taken, offering some differentiation of ability and student initiative.

This activity is a good compliment to my Angle Tangle Spider Web, which focuses on calculating angles.

There is also a brand new non-right sequel trig treasure map.

Also check out my brand new Triggy Riddle worksheet, which involves solving for both sides and angles.

For more great math class fun, check out my Collaborative Math Mosaics! Click Here for the full directory, sorted by topic. High school students love colouring too! They will work in collaboration to create a large mosaic... check them out!

Enjoy! ~ CalfordMath
