Lessons on connotation and denotation will get your students thinking about the impact word choice plays on a text, both as a reader and a writer. This is also digital resource. It can be used for distance or e-learning. Each unit will contain a Google File Link Page that will provide you with a Google Doc/Slides for each activity. Lesson on Tone and Mood: Students learn more about tone and mood through literature, film trailers, art, and advertisements. Class discussions are built into the PowerPoint and Google Slides Presentation.
Lesson on Connotation/Denotation: Students learn the impact of word choice on the author's tone. The lesson includes a collaborative and engaging student activity to practice and apply skills! My students rave about it!
Tone and Mood Exploration: Students explore tone and mood through music, video games, film, art, literature, photography, and memes! This collaborative (or independent) activity is student-driven. Differentiated worksheets support students of all levels! Students practice and apply their knowledge of tone to varying subjects and mediums. It is perfect to show students that similar subjects can take on a very different tone given the context.
Tone and Mood Mini-Lesson: Offer struggling students extra support with this small group mini-lesson and note taking guide. Google Slides/Doc and PowerPoint/Word options provided!
Tone and Mood Game: This game will have students collaborating with peers as they work to act out given tone words and apply them to sentences in a time-sensitive challenge game!
Tone and Mood Creative Writing Activity: Students will use paint chips to create a tone word. Then students will use the provided character, location, and genre cards to craft a short story to develop that tone word. A Short Story Share activity will have students collaborating and practicing with tone after the stories are drafted!
Tone and Mood Black-Out Poetry: Students will use the poems provided (very engaging poems that relate to our 21st-century students) to identify tone. Then students will box out the tone words. Finally, they will draw a picture of the mood in black marker or pencil over the top of the image! My students absolutely love this activity!
Finally, students will craft a literary analysis response on tone in one of three pieces of text (provided in the unit bundle). I have included texts for all of these activities that fit for middle school and high school students. I have included graphic organizers and rubrics for this activity as well!
