Description
Togo is the true story of the heroic sled dog who led the longest leg in the 1925 serum run, also known as the Great Race of Mercy, in Alaska. A diphtheria outbreak in Nome, Alaska led to the need for an antitoxin. However, poor weather meant the only means of transporting the antitoxin was by a sled dog relay. Twenty sled dog teams participated in this relay with 19 of the teams averaging 31 miles of the journey. Many people know of Balto since he was the lead dog on the final leg of The Serum Run/Great Race of Mercy. However, Leonhard Seppala, Togo, and their team completed 264 miles of the journey. In 2011, Time Magazine actually declared Togo to be the most heroic animal of all time.
Togo is a wonderful story of resilience and friendship and would be a great addition in a course that is studying core values. One could also use this film after studying the tale of Togo. This film stars Willem Dafoe and Julianne Nicholson.
