Description: In this web quest, high school students will explore the history, traditions, and cultural significance of the Kentucky Derby, one of the most famous horse races in the world. Through a series of online activities and research, students will learn about the key events, milestones, and notable horses and jockeys in the history of the Kentucky Derby, as well as the social and economic impact of the event on the state of Kentucky and the city of Louisville. Students will also analyze the significance of the Kentucky Derby in American culture, addressing questions such as the role of tradition and heritage in the event, and the values and beliefs it reflects. This web quest includes four activities and a final essay assignment.



Activities:
History of the Kentucky Derby

  • Students will visit the Kentucky Derby Museum website and explore the "History" section to learn about the origins of the Kentucky Derby, significant events, and notable horses and jockeys.
  • Students will watch a video and read articles on the website to take notes on the key events in the history of the Kentucky Derby.
  • Students will create a timeline of the most important events in the history of the Kentucky Derby.

Social and Cultural Aspects of the Kentucky Derby

  • Students will visit the Kentucky Derby website and explore the "Experience" section to learn about the social and cultural aspects of the event.
  • Students will read articles on the website to take notes on the fashion, food, and drinks associated with the event, as well as the impact it has on the local community and the state of Kentucky.
  • Students will create a poster or infographic that highlights the key aspects of the Kentucky Derby experience.

Economic Impact of the Kentucky Derby

  • Students will visit the Louisville Tourism website and explore the "Events" section to learn about the economic impact of the Kentucky Derby.
