Time For Kids Task Cards

If you are like me you LOVE Time For Kids Magazines. I think they are such a wonderful resource for students and teachers. The problem is that with such little time in a day i don't always get a chance to get to the TFK. I decided to create task cards for the magazines so that if my students ended early or needed something to do after a test or some down time they would be able to choose this as an option. Here is what is included:

Main Idea:
for this section students will choose an article from the magazine. they will write down the main idea and three supporting details.

Power Words:
There are power word section in many articles throughout the magazine. These are essentially vocabulary words. The students will need write down the definitions to the words, the synonym and antonym, create their own sentence, and write down the sentence is used in the article.

Cause and Effect
Students will choose an article that shows cause and effect relationships. They will write down 2 causes they find and the effects that go with them.

Fact and Opinion
Students will choose an article from the magazine and write down all the facts they find and all the opinions they find.

Compare & Contrast
Students will need to choose 2 articles from the magazine and compare and contrast them together.

Cover Page Predictor
They students will need to analyze the front cover of the magazine and make 3 predictions about what they will be reading about.

Making Connections
Students will need to choose 2-3 of the articles that you enjoyed or connected with. Once they have chosen the ones they want to work with they will need to think about the connections they can make with those articles. They will make a text to text connection, a text to self connection, and a text to world connection.

You've Got Skills
This section is from the very back page of TFK where they include questions and puzzles. Students will need to answer and do all of the activities.

Reflection
Each TFk has a cover story. Once the students have read the cover story and analyzed all the pictures and captions they will need to reflect on what they have read. Think about how the article made them feel and what their thoughts were about it.

Contribution Creator
Each TFk has a cover story. Once they have read the cover story and analyzed all the pictures and captions They will have to think about how they could contribute to the topic the article is discussing. Could you create technology to help the cause? Could you start a food drive to feed the poor…. Come up with 1 – 2 detailed ideas and explain them to us.
