Description
This product includes three engaging activities for the three branches of government, designed for middle grade students! This resource includes a Three Branches of Government Mini Unit, Three Branches of Government Reader's Theater, and a Desert Island Government Project.
The Three Branches of Government Mini-Unit includes informational readings, comprehension questions, and several assessment options!
There are a total of five informational reading passages, each complete with four multiple choice comprehension questions and three short-answer reflection questions that encourage critical-thinking. First there is an overview reading, followed by passages covering the legislative branch, executive branch, judicial branch, and checks and balances.
After that, there are several assessment options for students to complete. There is an image-matching activity plus a two-page quiz, which are great for assessing student understanding of the three branches of government. There are also two project choice board activities that the instructor may choose to use with students.
The Three Branches of Government Reader's Theater is a 5-Act, 25-role reader's theater script for the three branches of government in the United States of America. This product includes information about the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government, as well as checks and balances.
The acts are as follows:
Act I: A Plan for Government
Act II: A Two-House Legislature (Legislative Branch)
Act III: The Chief Executive (Executive Branch)
Act IV: The Supreme Court (Judicial Branch)
Act V: Checks and Balances
Each act includes discussion questions. There is a quiz for students at the conclusion of the play, as well as an extension activity in which students will create their own script through research for How a Bill Becomes a Law!
The Desert Island Government Project is an engaging, three-day government project for middle grade students! This product is great for teaching and assessing government concepts by having students design their own government for a desert island.
On day one, students will review key vocabulary, respond to big idea questions about government, and create a map of their island. On day two, students will respond to questions about the government of their island and then create a Constitution for their government. On day three, students will write a reflection on the project, write a vocabulary essay, and take a matching vocabulary quiz. Lastly, there are extra handouts to practice applying government projects!
