Description

This Smartboard Notebook exercise is a short, original text based on Lakota Myth. It can be used as a stand alone or as a companion for the Journeys Fifth Grade selection "The Birchbark House" lesson 5.22 (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012) Theme is the primary concept covered, in addition to characterization and prediction. The format of the exercise is based on items found on the Smarter Balance ELA practice test.

Native American cultures often consider all female elders to be grandmothers, hence "a grandmother" cautions the boys in the story. The story is based on Lakota myth, making this exercise appropriate for integrating multicultural texts into your curriculum.

The exercise is also available as a Word Docx file.
