This dystopian short story bundle offers great opportunities to review the elements of the The Veldt and incorporate a bit of suspense and creativity. Several activities *sneak in* standards-based tasks and challenge the kids in a fun and unique ways. Plus, what’s more fun than a culminating escape room?
The Veldt Activities & Worksheets:
★ Plot Diagram - Can your students complete a plot diagram for “The Veldt?”
★ Design a Brochure - Students will create a sales brochure or flyer for the HappyLife Home, including features, benefits, testimonials, common issues, troubleshooting, and product warnings.
★ Too Much of Anything… - Students take George Hadley’s thoughts to heart and generate four additional examples of when too much of anything becomes a bad thing.
★ Analyze the Setting - Students unpack the setting of the HappyLife Home and the setting of the Nursery. Then students consider how the settings impacted the characters, plot, and conflict.
★ Rewrite the Scene - The HappyLife Home does it all. George suspects it even has feelings. If that’s the case, invite your students to rewrite a scene from the house’s point of view.
★ Compare & Contrast - Watch a film adaptation of “The Veldt” and compare it to the short story.
The Veldt Escape Room Breakout Tasks:
★ Setting & Mood - Your students will determine the setting and mood established at the story's beginning, then make connections between the setting and the conflict.
★ Characters - In this simple task, your students will match the different characters in the story to quotes they said and traits or emotions they displayed.
★ Figurative Language - Students will identify the different types of figurative language used in "The Veldt" as they work their way through a maze.
★ Plot - Students will review a series of statements to determine which scenes did and did not occur in the text. Then they will place the remaining scenes on a plot diagram.
