Description

The Story of Hibbing, MN is a fun, interactive and memorable way for students to learn about natural resources as well as human and capital resources.

In Hibbing, MN, iron ore was found below the town and the townspeople made the choice to move their town down the road two miles instead of letting it be destroyed! They used natural, capital, and human resources along the way!

Students have fun learning about resources in the context of this exciting TRUE story!

In this 3-day lesson plan, students will brainstorm ideas about what THEY would do when faced with this dilemma. In Phase One, they'll have their own town hall meeting to come up with ideas, before using a fun decoding worksheet to discover what actually happened in Hibbing! In Phase Two, students will act out the story of Hibbing using a fun skit to bring the story to life! Afterwards, they will complete a journal reflection and timeline activity. In Phase Three, students will expand beyond the discussion of natural resources and learn about human resources and capital resources through a discussion, a fun search & find worksheet, and a game of BINGO.

Each phase is expected to take about 45 minutes.

History, science, and literacy connections are found throughout this lesson including the use of context clues, sequencing, multiple perspectives, fluency, writing, and predicting. Science goals are met through the examination of natural resources and History goals are achieved through the exploration of this true story from the early 1900's as it is brought to life for students!
