What educators are saying

This was a great purchase! I used it for my lesson leading up to Patriots Day and i loved it!! Thanks so much for such a beautiful, informative product!
Great resource for Veteran's Day. I liked that they were able to learn about the history of the Star Spangled Banner and it was great in helping them to understand the meaning behind the words in our National Anthem.

This unit is about the history of "The Star-Spangled Banner," the National Anthem of The United States of America. This product would be perfect not just for music class, but for social studies classes as well! This unit also helps fulfill some cross-curricular activities to literacy and history connections.

The main attraction of this package is the presentation slides with SafeShareTV examples to several performances of The Star-Spangled Banner. Both traditional and contemporary examples are included, including examples from Presidential Inaugurations and Super Bowl performances.

LITERACY CONNECTIONS:

RE-WRITE THE BANNER LYRICS - This activity would be perfect for centers or in some other group activity. Each line of the lyrics of The Star-Spangled Banner have been provided. The student will then re-write the lyric in his or her own words. These are provided in the package in two sizes- one prompt per page, and four prompts per page. (Grades 5-8)

EXPLAIN THE BANNER - This is a lengthier version of the activity listed above, but instead of one lyric, the student is asked to re-write the entire Star-Spangled Banner in his or her own words. You could even ask the student to write an explanation of the story as if they were talking to a person who had never heard of The Star-Spangled Banner before. (Grades 6-8)

CREATE YOUR OWN BANNER - Students will create a banner which represents their own lives and what they stand for (like a coat of arms activity). They are then provided an area at the bottom of the page to explain their flag's markings. (Grades 4-6)

CREATE A TIMELINE - This can be used as an assessment during the presentation, or by using the notes handout. Dates are provided, students are asked to give a short description of what happened in that year to help in the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner as a national anthem. (Grades 4-8)

VOCABULARY HANDOUT - There is a list of all essential vocabulary with definitions. (All Grades)

LYRICS OF THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER - There are two lyric pages provided in the pack, one in color that you can use as a poster, and another in BW that you can print on colored paper or use for handouts. You can also give these to your students as a supplement when completing other assessments. (All Grades)

OTHER WORKSHEETS AND ASSESSMENTS:

PREDICTIONS PAGE - Use this before you even tell your students they will be learning about The Star-Spangled Banner. Students will make a prediction for three different questions, and then fill in the real answer after the unit has concluded. (Grades 4-8)

FOLLOW ALONG NOTES - This is a fill in the blank and short answer assessment to be provided during the presentation. (Grades 5-8)

EXIT SLIPS - There are 6 pre-made exit slip assessments with short, but representative questions of the learning that took place. There is also one page of exit slips without a question so you can communicate your own to your students.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE - Key included. To be used with the vocabulary sheet. (Grades 5-8)

WORD SEARCH - Key included. Can be used as is. (All Grades)

COLORING SHEET "MY AMERICAN FLAG" - For fun :) (Grades 5 and Under)

As with all classes, only you know your students and how well they perform with certain activities. You are always encouraged to create your own assessments as well in addition to the resources I have created.

There are two types of presentations included:

  • PowerPoint Presentation with editable slides, should you choose.
  • PDF "Ready-to-go" file if you'd like to use the presentation as I've made it.

SAFESHARETV INFORMATION:

This presentation does not include actual video and/or audio files. Only links to SafeShareTV are included in the last few slides of the presentation.

SafeShareTV takes YouTube links and eliminates the distractions of related videos, autoplay, and best of all, NO ADS! This is why some sort of safe-viewer is recommended in the classroom. I have also made sure to edit the videos to crop out any unnecessary beginning time (like applause) so you get right to the music after clicking the link.

To see if your institution allows SafeShareTV, (from your institution's technology) click the link below to test the connection.

>>>>The Piano Guys Lacrimosa/Hello

You can always make use of this activity without SafeShareTV or YouTube, just delete the slides with the examples and use your own listening materials.
