What educators are saying

I really like this resource, but found it too difficult for the majority of this year's Grade 5's. Maybe another year...

Description

This unit covers the following big ideas:

  • Municipal, Provincial, and Federal Government - roles, responsibilities, and structure
  • Levels of Government working together - assessing the effectiveness of Government actions
  • Governments addressing social and environmental issues
  • Responsible citizenship, Charter rights, and freedoms, civic responsibilities
  • Identifying and mapping social and environmental issues - stakeholders and perspectives
  • Political parties - exploring political parties in Canada and student elections

This unit includes four assessments (three projects and one quiz). Additionally, this unit includes many slideshows and corresponding fill-in-the-blank student handouts, reflection questions, and opportunities for guided and self-directed learning. There are plenty of self-directed activities, including 5 word searches, 5 crossword puzzles, and 6 matching activities. Recently, we have updated this product to better align with the new social studies curriculum. We have added more activities and improved the existing ones! We have also made an effort to include more real-world applications!
