◾ HUMANISM AND RENAISSANCE ART
By evaluating artists of the Renaissance such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo, students will analyze the concept of humanism -- a cultural movement which turned away from medieval scholasticism and revived interest in ancient Greek and Roman thought by attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters.
◾ MACHIAVELLI
Students will evaluate changing ideas about politics by analyzing Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince, where students will determine for themselves whether or not it is better to lead by love or by fear.
◾ THE PRINTING PRESS AND THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION
With changes in how humans circulate information thanks to the invention of the Printing Press, Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses will circulate far and wide and spark a political-religious movement called the Protestant Reformation, where people will reject the abuses of the Catholic Church. A schism will result in the creation of thousands of new branches of Christianity.
◾ THE TUDORS: HENRY VIII AND ELIZABETH I
Students will assess the extent to which the Protestant Reformation was supported by analyzing King Henry VIII's break from the Roman Catholic Church following the Pope's rejection of his request for divorce. After a brief period of turmoil during the reign of his daughter, Mary I, students will examine the golden age that came with the reign of Elizabeth I.
◾ THE INQUISITION
The unit concludes with a look at the counter-Reformation, known as the Inquisition, where the Catholic Church sought to restore its power and influence over Europeans that had recently converted to Protestantism.
