What educators are saying

Great group of lessons to introduce The Planets to elementary students. My students loved learning about all the connections and enjoyed splitting the resource up into multiple days/movements.
Great resource to introduce Holst and the Planets - all of the info was clear and age-appropriate. Thank you for this time saver!

Description

NEW & IMPROVED! This file was completely updated in August 2020 to a GOOGLE SLIDES file with lots of new content, activities, and graphics. It is great for distance learning!

This lesson consists of 26 slides, 3 student worksheets and 10 pages of teacher notes/lesson plans and suggestions.

I like to use this lesson in 3rd grade when students learn about the solar system, but it would be appropriate for 2nd-5th grade.

Lesson Contents:

*Introduction to “The Planets,” Gustav Holst, the orchestra, and astrology.

*Colorful slide for each movement with important instruments, notable musical characteristics, astrological significance, and embedded YouTube videos with selected listening points.

*Connections to other musical compositions, including similarities between Mars & film music and later compositions for Pluto and Earth.

*Very thorough lesson plans and suggestions for introducing each part of the lesson.

*Hands on activities, including a movement activity for each of the movements, active listening questions, and connections to mood, rhythm, melody and instrumentation.

*Listening game suggestions and two student worksheets where students 1) match the planet with the correct subtitle and 2) identify the music they hear and color the correct planet.

*Interactive slides for rhythmic patterns and composition with planets and space themed words (includes modifications- the first is quarter and eighth notes only, the second adds sixteenth notes and the third adds sixteenth/eighth combinations- you choose based on the level of your students!)

*Example “Planet Speech Piece” with option to add body percussion.

*Directions and template for students to create their own speech piece for Earth or another one of the planets (students can use the interactive slides or pencil and paper).

I hope you enjoy this lesson, please consider leaving me a review on the updated product!!
