What educators are saying

I loved the video and reading aspect of this activity. It was easy to navigate, and as the questions were not word for word from the text, my students had to use their vocabulary and inference skills to find their answers. It was a good activity for both auditory learners and my readers.

Description

The Magna Carta Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 10 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 30 questions based on a British Museum video and the History.com website.

Students will be introduced to the topic of the Magna Carta by watching the British Museum video: What is Magna Carta? The video will go over the specific dates, people and events involved with the creation of the "Great Charter." The unpopular rule of King John over England, the rebellion of his Barons, and the creation of a treaty which would enforce all freemen to follow the law is reviewed. The video goes on to discuss the civil wars in England which followed the passing of the Charter and the eventual peace it helped usher in. The video also discusses how the Magna Carta didn't apply to most Englishmen at the time, they were indentured servants, not freemen. The video concludes by providing examples of future documents the Magna Carta would inspire, including the United States Declaration of Independence. After the video, students will proceed to the History.com website and read an article about the Magna Carta. More detailed information about King John's rise to power, the resulting civil wars and wars with France, the Baron rebellion, and the creation of the Magna Carta are provided. The article concludes by stating several Clauses of the Magna Carta and how they were eventually adopted into full English law so they applied to all citizens. These clauses can be found in the laws of many countries all over the world today.

This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
