What educators are saying

This was a fun way for the students to get into the story. They enjoyed the script and had fun acting it out.
This was a great activity to use for a close read of the short story. I have used it as a worksheet and a quiz. It works great for both.

Description

This lesson unit contains a complete guided reading worksheet with 32 questions (with answer key) for the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Questions consist of True and False, multiple choice, fill in the blank and short answer.

This is a classic short story published in 1948 that centers around small town rituals of holding a "lottery" where the "winner" receives a death sentence that centers around the offering of human life in order to appease the farming corn gods. A truly horrific story that would capture the attention of the most bored student.

It will take about 50-65 minutes for the students to complete the 32 question worksheet (depending on the student).

As a public high school English teacher, the biggest challenge I have is getting students to read in class or at home. Put a book or short story in front of them, they'll look at it for a few seconds and start day dreaming...

Until I stumbled upon something magnificent. Teenagers like accomplishment. These worksheets ask questions while the reader reads. Every couple of sentences, there's another question in true or false, fill in the blank, define, multiple choice formats. As the student reads, boom, another question. They answer it and continue reading. Before you know it, they have finished reading the story and completed all questions for further lessons/discussions.

These worksheets are great for daily lessons, test/quiz grades, extra credit, homework, group work (in pairs of two), substitute teacher lessons, emergency lesson plans, great for ESOL or however you can imagine.
