Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" is a dystopian short story that examines conformity, superstition, and blind tradition. Assess students' comprehension, understanding, and reading completion using these FREE bell ringer reading quizzes!

These bell ringer quizzes include six close reading questions that evaluate students' reading comprehension. If you wish to use these reading comprehension quizzes for multiple classes, you can divide the questions into two or three sets.  With two to three questions, you can evaluate students' comprehension and completion of their reading homework.  Dividing these questions prevents academic dishonesty since each class' quiz will be different.

The Google Form® quiz enables you to use this resource for online learning and 1:1 classrooms. This file is formatted as a quiz and is set to automatically grade the multiple-choice questions. The default settings also collect email addresses, release correct answers, and do not allow editing. Be sure to adjust any of these settings to meet the unique needs of your classroom.  See the instructions within the resource for more guidance with utilizing this editable format.

This resource also includes a detailed answer key to consolidate these reading comprehension questions.  This answer key provides multiple possible answers based on Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.”
