Description

Students assess whether or not the ads used by the Ministry of the Interior at the turn of the 19th century measure up to the accuracy and truth standards as set out by the Canadian Standards for Truth in Advertising.

PROCEDURE: Students will examine several advertising posters and copy, and compare these with several primary and secondary sources [text/images] from the actual experience of settlers who immigrated to the Canadian West. Students then assess the advertisements against the standards provided by the Canadian Standards for Truth in Advertising.

EXTENSION: As an extension, students create humorous pessimistic posters advertising the worst features of the life in the Canadian West based up on their research of primary/secondary sources.
