Resource Components & Features

LITERATURE RESPONSE QUESTIONS

A set of 5-8 questions for each chapter of the novel. Grouped for differentiated instruction, prompts are split into these three sections:

  • The Comprehending questions ask about plot.
  • The Analyzing questions ask students to draw conclusions and support their thinking with textual evidence.
  • The Connecting prompts ask students to explore how their own worlds and lives reflect themes and raise questions that surface in the book.

Though the elements of horror in the novel are tween-appropriate, the book does raise some tough and complicated questions about violence, family, and the legacy of the Atlantic slave trade. The literature response prompts ask students to grapple with and reflect on personal experience with themes the reading raises.

Literature Responses are available in both digital and printer-friendly formats.

VOCABULARY

Each chapter’s vocabulary words are available as illustrated study sheets with easy to understand definitions. Practice games for each chapter’s vocabulary words are available to play on Kahoot. Find the list & game links in the Vocabulary section of each literature response.
