    Description

Willie Mays, born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama, is one of the greatest baseball players in history. He earned the nickname "The Say Hey Kid" for his habit of saying "Say hey" to teammates and fans. Mays had a remarkable 22-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily with the New York and San Francisco Giants, as well as the New York Mets.

Known for his exceptional skills both at bat and in the outfield, Mays was a 24-time All-Star and a two-time National League MVP. He won 12 Gold Glove Awards for his outstanding fielding abilities and led the National League in home runs four times.

Mays' career highlights include winning the World Series with the Giants in 1954, where he made one of the most famous catches in baseball history known as "The Catch." He finished his career with 660 home runs, placing him fifth on the all-time home run list at the time of his retirement.

Off the field, Mays faced racial discrimination and challenges as one of the few African American players in MLB during the era of segregation. Despite these obstacles, he became a symbol of resilience and excellence, inspiring generations of players and fans alike.

Willie Mays was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Throughout his life, he has remained involved in baseball and continues to be revered as an icon of the sport.
