Description

The Giver Unit | The Giver Unit Plan | The Giver Resources

The Giver is a timless book that is perfectly suited for students in the middle school grades. They are engaged by the premise and mature enough to grasp the deeper issues presented in the novel. Since dystopian literature is very popular with middle schoolers currently, its nice to introduce them to the book that is one of the pioneers of that genre.

There are three main focuses of this unit – argument writing, close reading, and student-driven discussions. In addition, this unit meets multiple standards of the Common Core. The entire unit builds towards the end product – an argument essay dealing with the central themes of the novel. Each week in the unit plan has a different skill that builds towards the final essay. In addition, students learn a different close reading margin writing strategy each week. Finally, students participate in a weekly student-driven discussions that incorporates the use of different types of questions.

You'll receive:
A detailed unit plan with rationale and instructions, daily activities that span the entire unit, electronic copies of all supplemental activities and articles, student handouts for replication, two thought-provoking essay prompts, and a complete argument writing unit.
