Description

Amazing end of the year activity!

Fill weeks after testing with this fun and engaging 8-day project that allows students to experience how math can benefit them in the real world!
This project includes 8 valuable tasks that allow students to explore careers and gain an understanding of real-world expenses. It includes detailed instructions for each slide as well as completed examples that clearly demonstrate expectations. Accommodations such as sentence frames are also provided within this project so you do not have to put in additional efforts to ensure it is appropriate for ELL and students with IEPs.

In this project, students will:
-Create a vision board while imagining what they see in their future
-Explore careers and the salaries that are paired with them

-Understand how salaries are impacted by taxes by comparing their gross income and take home salary

-Calculate monthly expenses they can afford based on their salary

-Find property to buy/rent that fits within 30% of their gross income
-Find a vehicle to lease/own that fits within 10% of their take home income
-Explore additional living expenses and calculate net income

-Reflect on net income and what should be done with additional funds
-Reflect on the project and how it helped to prepare them for the real world

A detailed rubric is also included to help make grading easy and allow students to understand scores.

Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?
Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
