What educators are saying

My students love stuff like this, and it makes me happy to see them be engaged, debating ideas, and thinking critically. I really enjoyed this activity, and how it perfectly led us in to my Fall of Rome lecture. Thank you.
My students were able to effectively use their inferencing skills and had some great discussions around the choices that they would have made to prevent Rome from falling. Thank you!

Description

We've got you covered tomorrow with this ready to print collaborative, critical thinking activity. Use on a Monday or Friday for a SURE FIRE boredom-busting pre-reading activity. I've used this for 8 years as the lead in to our section on the factors that led to the fall of the Western Roman empire. Printable handouts, Powerpoint/Google Slide Images, best practice tips, and answer keys are all provided.

The Activity:

Rome is burning - Literally and figuratively. There is economic unrest, political turmoil, rapid expansion, and major money issues. Students will read through authentic scenarios and choose from three solutions they feel best address the problem presented. Next they extend their thinking to consider possible advantages and disadvantages of their choice. Once each individual or team of individuals has an opportunity to consider their options reconvene as a full class and use the pre-made powerpoint slides and answer key to reveal what the Romans chose. Keep score of how many matches students have to the actual Roman plan of action to make it a fun game if desired. I've used this for 8 years and my students always have fun with it. Once completed students are ready to read about the contributing factors that led to the fall of the Western Roman empire.
