Description
- This course explores more than 20 Pokémon and their possible connections to the mythology and culture of India. We will examine popular fan theories about the origins of these Pokémon, and weigh the merits (or lack thereof) in these ideas. Students will learn about cultural traditions that may have inspired Pokémon, and also several Indian myths and legends that could have been the basis for many popular Pokémon. While the focus of this class is the culture/mythology of India, it is through the narrow lens of the Pokémon world, and thus is not a comprehensive review of the entirety of Indian culture, folklore, or mythology.
- In the document I share, you will find the material I use for this “flex class” I teach on Outschool. The Prezi is divided into four parts. Each part explores several Pokemon and their relationship to the topic. Generally, the first slide has a description of the Pokemon, followed by its connection to the culture and mythology of India. On the final slide for each Pokemon, there are some extension activities and project ideas to expand the students’ understanding.
- If you are using these materials in a regular school setting, you might want to use these materials for reverse instruction or a flipped classroom unit. For instance, you can assign the descriptions to read at home and take notes, and then use the extension activities as projects or group explorations to complete in class.
- If you are using these materials in a home school setting, you could choose to do one part per day or one part per week, doing the extension activities as time allows.
