Description
This handout gives students a brief summary of the Belgian Congo and their history with the U.S. The bulk of it focuses on how Patrice Lumumba helped lead an independence movement against Belgium, but then the CIA believes he was a communist and helped Lumumba's enemies assassinate him. It includes several primary source documents for students to read, including a speech by Lumumba at the Congo independence ceremony, and two recently declassified CIA communications about overthrowing Lumumba. Students are asked analysis questions several times in the handout. It is formatted for being done in class, but the lines can be replaced by boxes so you could assign it in google classroom. It also connects to the CIA's overthrow of Mosaddegh in Iran, so using this handout before it would be useful:
