Description

Students enjoy hearing stories. If it's a story that they can identify with, they enjoy it even more. This is a story I use with my 6th grade math class to help them remember the procedure used to find equivalent fractions. After students understand the concept as it relates to fractions, you can use it again when it's time to solve for variables and keep things "fair" on both sides of the equation. It will get to a point in the year where you will just have to say "Brother/Sister Principle" and they'll know what you mean.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
