This "Abolition Now: The Anti-Slavery Movement" Distance Learning Pack includes:

1) A comprehensive study of abolitionists and the anti-slavery movement in America in the early to mid-19th century. Students will begin by examining the origins of the abolition movement in America found in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, as well as the religious revivals and social reforms of the early 1800s. Then, your class will read the words of the Three-Fifths Compromise and examine the meaning behind the wording of the provision. In addition, your students will compare the citizenship status of slaves to that of others in society, and then write a brief statement from the point of view of the abolitionist on whether or not they agree with the compromise. Your students will then examine the role of several prominent individuals and groups of the abolitionist movement -- including William Lloyd Garrison, the Grimke Sisters, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and the Underground Railroad -- and explain how each fought to end slavery in America. Lastly, your class will use a primary source to evaluate the bravery and selflessness of Harriet Tubman as a conductor of the Underground Railroad. Students will read an excerpt from an interview that Tubman gave in 1905 about a raid she helped lead to liberate slaves in South Carolina and use the document to answer questions about Tubman's role as an abolitionist.

The great thing about this activity is that it gives you many different ways to use it. You can have the students work individually on the activity or they can discuss in pairs. You can set it up as a class discussion or debate or have students walk around the room discussing the subject matter. The options for this activity are endless.
