What educators are saying

My students enjoyed the scenarios. There is a true need for this level of Social Skills work that involves inferencing.
I used this during my first year teaching MS (previous HS teacher). Some of it was hard for the students to grasp because they didn't understand some of the concepts yet, but I still LOVE this resource!!

Social inferences for TEENS. Google slides, digital PDFs and Print

Being a middle and high school student and teen is tough enough. Having to learn, understand/follow social rules and have good social skills makes it even tougher (even more so when social expectations are not always clear). Developing a social understanding and navigating the social world is a tough concept, even more so when you are a teen where social expectations and rules are constantly changing. Wouldn’t it be so much easier if people just told you how to behave, how to act, what to do and what to say? That would be nice wouldn’t it? Unfortunately though that’s not how the social world works. A lot of our social behavior is governed by ‘unwritten rules’ where we are just ‘expected’ to know what to. If we are unaware of those rules or do not know how to figure out those rules (we unable to make good social inferences), this may cause us to do or say the wrong thing. This can break down social interactions.

Use of Adobe Acrobat (which can be downloaded for free) is recommended to view the no print pages AND to use the ‘No print’ features on a computer.

Use of iBooks (preloaded/free) is recommended to use the ‘No print’ features on an iPad/iPhone.

Using a combination of clip art and real life pictures, this workbook (available as both a NO-PRINT and PRINTABLE workbook) is designed to help older students and teens (middle and high school students) navigate through a variety of different social situations to help strengthen their ability to:

1- Correctly read a social situation.

2- Figure what is happening in that social situation.

    3. Figure out what the expected behaviors are for that situation (based upon environmental cues, other people’s actions, other people’s words etc).

    4. Know what expected actions they NEED to do and when they need to do them.

***The clipart used within this workbook is of a more mature design that is more socially appropriate for teens and older students***

This packet is specifically broken down into the following key skills where students will get the opportunity to practice and work on:

-Reading the room (what should students do in a specific room/situation based upon what is going on around them).

-What are they thinking (students make inferences about what someone may be thinking about)

-What will they do (students make inferences about what actions others may do in different situations)

-What should I do (students figure out what actions they should do in different situations based upon what is happening around them)

Specifically when it comes to figuring out social language, students get to practice figuring out what others mean (and then how they should respond) when others use:

    -Sarcasm

    -Figurative language

    -Slang

    -Indirect language

    -Downplay a situation

    Answer key is provided.

What will they think and say? Social skills for teens. Perspective & inferences

Have your teens practice perspective taking, inferencing and social skills by utilizing these fun “fill in the speech/thought bubble” task cards.

These cards are targeted toward teens (middle, high and secondary school) where your older students will get to practice:

1: Reading a social situation and interaction between different students

2: Making smart guesses about what the interaction may make students ‘think’

3: Making smart guesses about how the students may respond in that interaction (what they are likely to say)

Task cards can be laminated so responses can be hand written using a dry erase marker so task cards can be reused. 55 different social scenario task cards are provided.

For each of the different social interactions/task cards, 2 social reflection worksheets are included to provide additional social inferencing practice pertaining to each specific social scenario.

An answer key is provided for worksheet responses.

Modified cards (with an option of 3 different answers) are provided those students who need a greater level of support/struggle with open ended questions.

Interactive digital social and behavior skill scenarios for teens. Middle and high school. Autism.

Social and behavior skills for teens GOOGLE SLIDES (THIS IS ADDED AS A BONUS FILE)

An interactive digital PDF for teens and older students in middle and high school, that targets social and behavior skills through analyzing different scenarios of social and behavioral interactions. Skills targeted include, making inferences, perspective taking, identifying emotions, reading non-verbal cues, identifying expected behaviors for a given situation and assessing and predicting social/behavioral responses.

The interactive pdf can be used on a tablet, laptop or smartphone. Students read through different social/behavioral scenarios, and then select/click on the appropriate multiple answer. A correct response will move the student onto the next question.

An option is also provided where students are able to type in their answers as opposed to utilizing multiple choice responses.

Printable worksheets (both color and black and white) are also included as extension activities for each of the scenarios. The worksheets include additional questions to further practice utilizing and understanding social and behavior interactions. An answer key is provided for these worksheets.
