    Description

This bundle contains 16 "3 part mini lessons" on TedED "Hidden Figures" in Black History and a Rubric. This provides at least one month worth of Black History Lessons where the students are not only facilitating discussions but are teaching each other through video worksheets and kahoots.

This takes the load off of you as a teacher and honestly teaches you alot of history that you may have never known such as the full story of Rosa Parks, the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, and The Great Dismal Swamp to name a few.

I dropped the James Baldwin summary as an example below. I hope you and your students enjoy these lessons as mcuh as I enjoyed making them.

James Baldwin TedEd 3 part Mini-Lesson(Kahoot-computers needed)

Notes of a native son: The world according to James Baldwin

I love this lesson because of the amazing discussion you can have in the part 3 fishbowl, students will love it for the kahoot, and you will love it for the essentially no prep. All you have to do is print the pages, set up the seats in an inner and outer circle for the fishbowl discussion, and flow through the lesson.

    Fishbowl Teaching Strategy Example

Guiding students through topics such as homosexuality, race relations, and the ongoing history of obtaining rights is always a lesson in Social Emotional Learning.

I would write the objective as

Students will be able to demonstrates a range of communication and social skills to interact effectively.

In my lesson plan, I would include that it

    • cultivates constructive relationships with others.
    • Identifies and demonstrates approaches to addressing interpersonal conflict.

Source for this and other Social Emotional Learning Objectives

Please share this objective explicitly with your students.

Expilicitly telling them this objective will help them understand that learning how to effectively communicate with each other is part of what they are learning in this lesson AND it will make your life so much easier as far as classroom management for the discussion.

Also consider changing the starter discussion questions based on age group and other specific class needs.

Let me know how it goes especially if your students come through with some amazing discussion questions.

Part 1: Ted Ed Video Guided Notes with Discussion Question 12 "graded" questions, 2 Discussion Questions.

Part 2: 10 Question Kahoot - questions are directly pulled from worksheet and function as an answer sheet

Notes of a Native Son: James Baldwin Kahoot

    Part 3: Socratic Seminar Worksheet.

Fishbowl format that contains ~3 starter questions for student discussion. Also formatted for student question creation with evidence required for claims on the inner/outer circle.

RUBRIC- Students teaching Students Presentations(No Prep)

This is one of my Gems, this rubric is so clear. It's basically all the instructions you need to give besides giving students their topics to present. In my personal opinion, there's not much better in this teaching world than a "Print & Go" where students actually learn. Let me know if I can make it any clearer or improve it in any way. Thank you for your purchase

    3 Delivery Tips:

    1. I have let students choose their own groups and I have chosen groups for them, just depends on the class.

    2. Students creating their own thoughtful questions on their topic/individuals are key to their own success. Nudge them into turning them into doing a little research.

    3. Adjust as you need but keep to the heart of this lesson. Goal is to get a Win-Win. Takes the heavy lift off you and forces the students to engage with and delivery the content in a creative way that they can enjoy.
