What educators are saying

This was helpful for my students to give them a foundation. Struggling students were able to see what they needed to do and how to do it. A great resource for research writing.
Used this in my science literacy elective, students and myself found it very interesting and engaging

Description

This research project explores the universal theme of humanity vs. technology. Technology is featured in dystopian literature and science fiction, as well as virtually implemented in every aspect of our daily lives.

With technology advancing at an unprecedented rate, including the rapid development of artificial intelligence, how will this ultimately impact humanity?

Students will research contrasting viewpoints on the benefits of technology vs. the negative consequences or potential harm. A pre-search activity examining the portrayal of tech in film and music will hook your students from the start!

After conducting research, students will present their findings in a final project. Two project options are included to allow for differentiation.

All the materials you need are provided! Students will have access to a group of relevant websites bookmarked for research. A note-taking chart with guiding questions will provide students with structure throughout the research process.

Both project options include a student handout providing a list of specific requirements and clear directions. Grading rubrics for both project options are also available.

Unlike most research projects, this resource includes a personalization component. Students' final projects will include their own personal opinions and experiences - along with researched facts and data.

The Man vs. Technology Research Project includes the following materials:

  • A modern, attractive project Google Site (handouts with the same information and graphics are included as an alternative)
  • Technology in Art, Song, and Media Analysis Activity with an answer key
  • Access to a Symbaloo Webmix of 52 bookmarked sites featuring evidence that technology has improved and enhanced our lives
  • 52 bookmarked sites documenting the potential harmful consequences of technology
  • Digital Note-Taking Card with guiding prompts
  • MLA Version 9 Source Citation Sheet with examples
  • Final Research Project Handout with a list of requirements (Create a Google Site or Create a Google Slide Presentation)
  • Final Project Grading Rubrics for both options
  • A Pdf Teacher's Guide with implementation notes, Google Drive resource links, directions for Microsoft Office users and information on downloading printable handouts

This research project is designed for 9th-12th grade and will take approximately 3-4 class periods to complete.

This resource can serve as a great springboard for research when studying the man vs. technology conflict. Teachers may also implement this while reading Frankenstein or any story featuring man vs. tech as a central theme.

The materials also support the sociology of technology and can provide a supplementary project for any computer science course.
