Description

Teach your students the strategy for how to find the plot in literary texts and identify the theme as the author's message to the reader. Students will use a Theme Think Map to walk through the process of finding the theme by using the plot and text evidence. Modeling Example, Anchor Charts, Think Map, Common Theme Charts, and Practice sheet are included. Once your students learn the strategy, they can use the Theme Think Map with any literary text. There is also a flap book as an additional option for extending the lesson.

• I use the first short story to model and map and then allow students to partner read the following 2 short stories before asking them to try to find the theme independently.

• After students demonstrate mastery with short stories, they are ready to apply the strategy to poetry, trade books, novels, or longer passages.

Books are one of the greatest resources for lessons in life!
