Description

This SAVE THE TURKEY unit is perfect for the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving Break. It begins with asking and answering questions during the read aloud of Turkey Trouble. After the story, students learn about dialogue and go on a dialogue hunt. Next, you move on to a mini-lesson about reading with expression. Students make puppets and work in groups to practice reading with fluency and expression during a reader's theatre. The next mini-lesson focuses on opinion writing as students create a disguise for turkey and write an opinion piece including an opening, reasons to support their opinion, and a closing.

If your students need extra practice with dialogue, we included two dialogue noodle activities. We also included extra practice with writing dialogue. Students turn speech bubbles into dialogue or write in each speech bubble.

If you’re feeling extra festive, you can conclude the unit by making a pizza snack using half of a mini bagel, pizza sauce, and cheese. After eating the pizza snack your students will list five reasons to have pizza instead of turkey at Thanksgiving dinner.
