TRASH TO TREASURE Trash & Recycling STEAM Unit

This 16-page, 6-hour (more or less...easily adjustable) STEAM unit includes lesson plans, hand outs, parent notes, criteria sheets, and examples for 4 hands-on activities related to trash and recycling!

Activities include:

• Collect trash from outside or around the school to create a Trash Ball. Hypothesize how big the ball will be. Then compare/contrast the balls from different classrooms, grades, areas, etc.
• Make paper from paper scraps!
• Design Recycling Posters to put around the school
• Create Trash Masks using criteria, then judge them to select the best one based on the criteria.
• BONUS: Trash Trivia Game

I have used this unit for two different after school clubs (Grossology and Recycling Club) as well as in my gifted classroom as we learned about the environment and helping others. It could also be used in a STEM or Art class or part of a science unit about recycling. Critical and creative thinking, problem solving, group dynamics, leadership, and research are all integrated into these lessons.
