What educators are saying

I'm always looking to vary up how I teach different skills including poetry. This was another resource to do something different in analyzing a poem. I think it also helps because HS teachers in my district use this as well.
I found this resource at the end of our poetry unit, and I wish I had found it earlier! I will definitely be using it earlier in the year next time!

Description

This is a 52-slide PREZI presentation introduction to TPCASTT, a method for reading and analyzing poetry.

Explains what each part of TPCASTT stands for and gives examples.

If you are searching for a tried and true method to help your students analyze and understand poetry, then look no further!

TPCASTT is a systematic method of poetry analysis that helps students access poetry and enjoy it. TPCASTT is a best practice activity used in IB, AP, and Pre-AP ELA courses but can easily be used with students at any level. TPCASTT stands for: title, paraphrase, connotation, attitude, shift, title, and theme.

Incuded in this product:

  1. A 52-slide Prezi (Prezi link has been updated!) that introduces students to the TPCASTT method and walks them through a sample analysis using the first stanza of Walt Whitman’s, “O Captain! My Captain!”
  2. A PDF, Microsoft Word, and Google Doc student handout laying out the TPCASTT format with key questions.
  3. A PDF copy of the analysis of “O Captain! My Captain!” covered in the Prezi.
  4. A PDF copy of the poem “O Captain! My Captain!” and an editable Microsoft Word TPCASTT template. These two copies are great for students to use for annotation and notetaking while viewing the Prezi.

Check out my annotation and analysis of ”O Captain! My Captain!” for a detailed analysis of the ENTIRE poem.
