What educators are saying

This resource saved my life. Like I was struggling to figure out what to give my literature students. This was a godsend. Thank you!
As a special education teacher, I am always looking for resources to use in my classroom that will help my students understand grade level readings. We are able to walk through the chapters with vocabulary, summaries and comprehension questions.

Description

This 80-page workbook for J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit or There and Back Again includes comprehension (fill-in-the-blank chapter summaries & follow-up questions), vocabulary, literature skill exercises, a movie/book comparison guide (part 1 of the trilogy), and a final assessment. Great for middle school or high school. This novel study is available in print and digital (with Google Slides), and has a MODIFIED version with word banks and limited choices for lower-ability learners. Key included.

(For the PRINT ONLY version, click here for the black + white PDF resource.)

WORKBOOK CONTAINS:

  • COVER PAGE + TABLE OF CONTENTS (3 pages)
  • VOCABULARY WORK (10 pages): 24 vocabulary terms. Five exercises include definition matching, icon matching, multiple-choice word work, crossword puzzle (online link for digital use), and vocabulary usage.
  • CHAPTER WORK (38 pages): Each chapter (19) has a one-page fill-in-the-blank summary with one page follow-up comprehension questions - short answer, T/F, and multiple choice. The summaries work great as study guide tools, small group activities, class discussions, or to ensure independent reading comprehension.
  • LITERATURE SKILLS EXERCISES (22 pages): There's a literature skill exercise after every chapter. Exercises teach a concept by providing background information and/or examples before students apply the skill to the chapter. Skills include the following elements of fiction and literary devices: point of view (1st vs 3rd person), plot (exposition, rising action, climax...), character (protagonist, antagonist, static, dynamic), setting (social/cultural environment), foreshadowing, theme, motif, personification, metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. There's also critical thinking questions, skill reviews, and a movie (Unexpected Journey) vs book comparison after chapter 6.
  • END-OF-BOOK TEST (8 pages): Character matching, multiple choice, T/F, and extended response. 65 questions + 1 essay (70 points) with 10 bonus points for extra credit questions.

The workbook is available as a black + white PDF, convenient for printing. It's also available as a full-color PDF for those who have the ability to share PDFs digitally, like with Kami, or if you'd like to upload all or portions to EASEL by TpT. I've converted the color workbook into Google Slides with text boxes and moveable pieces already in place. No prep for you! This is a convenient feature for digital learning or for those who prefer a paperless option.

A MODIFIED version in print and Google Slides is included for SPED or struggling learners. Adaptations include adding word banks for chapter summaries on the bottom of pages, limited choices for some vocabulary work, and condensed matching on the final test. These modifications helped my ESL students who enjoyed the book but struggled with the work. Students who’d benefit from modified curriculum can complete this COMPATIBLE version along side peers completing the regular version.

NOTE: The zip file contains PDF documents for printing and two links that will prompt you to "make a copy" of Google Slides. Slides will download right to your Google Drive. Google account required for this feature.

For a quick & simple resource for The Hobbit that's NOT AN EXTENSIVE NOVEL STUDY, try chapter-by-chapter comprehension guide fill-in-the-blank summaries on TRI-FOLD BOOKMARKS or GOOGLE SLIDES. Content from these resources (chapter summaries) are included in the workbook.

***FOR A FREE CROSSWORD PUZZLE ON THE HOBBIT, CLICK HERE. This GIANT summative crossword makes a fun end-of-book activity to help students recall 75 key details in the book, including characters, places, events, & more. Download also includes a link to a KAHOOT! game. (New feature!)
