Description
Our Diary of Anne Frank writing prompts never fail to get conversation started. And not just any surface conversation! In response to the 27 prompts, learners will write a short quickwrite essay in a journal writing format. Questions like these get kids thinking deeply about life and talking deeply about the things that really matter.
Quickwrites are ideal for . . .
→ Conversation starters
→ Developing empathy & connection w/ the story
→ Low-stress writing practice
→ Writing journals
→ Exit tickets
SUGGESTED ACTIVITY IMPLEMENTATION
These writing prompts work well as bellringers to start class, a writing/discussion break between reading, or to close out class. Depending on the prompt, use them to preload before a section or to process a reading section. They require learners to write their unedited off-the-cuff responses to various quotes, situations, issues that arise from within the story. The questions take the learners into memories from their lives (activating prior knowledge), connections with the story’s characters and history (encouraging empathetic reading and understanding), and deep areas of thematic meaning (spurring informal argumentation). These discussions might prove to be some of the most meaningful explorations your learners experience.

NOTE: These questions are specifically about the Goodrich and Hackett stage play version of The Diary of Anne Frank included in the Prentice Hall literature books, but many of the questions are useful for discussion surrounding the novel, The Diary of a Young Girl.
Enjoy! And let's together believe there's still some good in this world.
