What educators are saying

Great questions! I've seen the TEDtalk multiple times but struggled to pull out questions suitable for a high school level. The personal reflection at the end was great for them.
Great resource! She is a very funny speaker, and I love how it addresses the 'myth' of a single Africa. Thank you very much!

Description

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian author of multiple fictional and non-fiction works, and a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient. Her texts explore themes of feminism, race, and intersectionality, poetry, and many other topics. She’s even won a GRAMMY as a featured artist on Beyonce (Beyonce’s 5th album)!

This talk is from 2009 and discusses the dangers of how our single stories (stereotypes) of people and places are problematic for everyone. This talk also took her from a rising star in the literary scene to a heavyweight, and for good reason!

This resource includes digital or printable handouts including:

  1. Background sheet on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (including the link to the talk)
  2. Pre-Viewing Question sheet to gauge your students current understanding of stereotypes and where they come from.
  3. During Viewing Question sheet to complete as you watch the talk
  4. Two Options for After Viewing Question Sheets with follow up research tasks, and a paragraph response.

Use any one of the sheets individually or in combination with the others!

All handouts are in Word format and are 100% editable.

Happy teaching!
