Description
A Viewing Guide to get your class thinking about the importance of SLEEP!
For many different reasons (schoolwork, FOMO, social media, etc.), teens these days are regularly going to bed between 2-4 in the morning! But because they're still young, and largely still functioning while sleep deprived, they often don't think of their sleep as being as valuable as it is!
Matt Walker is a scientist who spends his days studying sleep. He has been a professor of psychiatry at Harvard, the University of California, and is currently the director of the Centre for Human Sleep Science. In this TED Talk, he discusses the effects of sleep on your aging, memory, immune system, and other overall wellbeing. His focus is on thinking about how sleep is not simply this thing we do to ‘regain energy’, but instead something that resets many of our bodies’ functions. It’s also about some of the things we can do to improve our sleep.
Given that 12–25-year old’s sleep is the most uneven, shifting, and interrupted out of any age group after infanthood, it has never been more important to understanding why we need sleep.
This resource includes digital or printable handouts including:
- Background sheet on Matt Walker (including the link to the talk)
- Pre-Viewing Question sheet to gauge your students current understanding of sleep and what happens while we're sleeping.
- During Viewing Question sheet to complete as you watch the talk.
- Two Options for After Viewing Question Sheets (do one or both!) with follow up research tasks, and paragraph responses, designed to solidify and apply what your class has learned.
Use any one of the sheets individually or in combination with the others!
All handouts are in Word format and are 100% editable.
Happy teaching!
